Streaks Are Meant to Be Broken
I had a wonderful meeting with Jenn Huber a nutritionist who runs the community The Midlife Feast. During our session, she encouraged me to vary my workouts. To use new muscles and challenge my body in different ways. I have been working out with Michael Romano, my wonderful trainer, for over 3 years and I am certain he varies my workouts, but outside of those sessions I stick to my usual tricks.
Fortunately, her suggestion to change things up and try new things feels fun and empowering to me. Trying something new can release the need for perfection and awaken a beginner's mind. Since our conversation, I have revisited my peloton that I have not used in a while. While on it, I didn't worry about streaks or personal bests. The point for me was simply to move my body differently. An achievable goal!
The only streaks I plan to keep in my life are two cups of coffee every morning and playing Quordle with my awesome Quordle Crew every night (you know who you are). But beyond that, maybe streaks are meant to be broken.
How could you add variety to your life? What are some streaks you are committed to that you could break? If you are a reader, can you open up to new genres of books? If you are a foodie, can you try different restaurants? If you hang out with the same people, can you invite new people in?
I am going to continue to figure out new ways to move my body. Should I join an indoor pool? Play paddle tennis with my husband? Dance? There are so many fun ways to move and being a generalist seems like a great approach. Since I am not headed for the Olympics anyway, I may as well enjoy my movement and continue to try new things.
