Career Myth: I Don’t Need To Stay on Top of Technology Trends

Keeping up with technology is challenging --especially for those of us who weren’t raised with the internet and social media.  Many of us feel like technology is a second language; one that we are learning in adulthood. But we can learn new things and we do have a foundation to build upon.

Technology can make our life easier

Technology can make our life easier in many ways. As a solopreneur, I rely on technology like Zoom for meetings, Excel to track my clients, Canva to help create instagram posts. My website to publish my blogs and promote my business. And recently I just started using Calendly to help schedule my clients. If I didn’t have these tools, I would have to spend lots of money and time for these same services. I am already seeing the reward of using Calendly because I no longer have the back and forth with clients trying to find a mutually free date to meet. As a result, this is now time I can spend writing blogs, doing laundry or walking my dog.

Pretty much every job requires a comfort level with technology

Unfortunately, some of my clients insist that they simply “don’t do technology”. This is problematic because it is simply no longer acceptable to be “anti-tech”. Unless you are living under a rock, your job is going to require some sort of tech skills. So rather than shrug your shoulders and give up, join the fun! There are so many awesome tools we can benefit from--many of which you may already be using.

You are using technology already, and you can build on this foundation

Do you have a phone? Use the washing machine? Operate your car? These are all versions of technology. If you can figure these things out, you can take the leap to other forms of technology. You can learn anything online these days. Do you want to become more familiar with Excel or Asana or Canva? Just go to Udemy or LinkedIn Learning or other platforms to take classes online. Ask your kids or other younger people to help you. Employ a high school student to help you navigate the technology you need to learn.

Don’t deny yourself these opportunities to take advantage of these resources. Start using technology in your everyday life. Get excited by new developments. Get out of your comfort zone. There are tons of tools out there that are worth trying. Introduce technology into your life so you can say with confidence at your next job interview that you are comfortable with technology and happy to learn anything you don’t already know.
