You Are Just Getting Started

I love the phrase “you are just getting started”. It is so hopeful, optimistic and energizing. In what areas of your life are you just getting started? What areas are you starting to think about, starting to work on, ready to try?

Do you want more family bonding? How about starting with a Sunday family dinner? Once you do that, who knows how that will grow and change. You are just getting started.

Do you want more connection with your spouse? Plan a weekly, biweekly or monthly date night (whatever you can manage) and bring the Marriage and Martinis date night book with you while you are at it. How does this connection impact the rest of your time together? How can you grow together? You are just getting started.

Do you want to grow in your career?  Begin reaching out to people who can teach you. Do they have a job you eventually want? Do they know your strengths and weaknesses and can help guide you? How do these relationships help you move in the right direction in your career? You are just getting started.

Do you want a better work/life balance? Reflect on your calendar. Where are there opportunities to adjust your energy. Do you spend too much time on activities at work that don’t pay off? How could you spend that time differently? Do you do things at home that you don’t enjoy and you could outsource? Paying attention to how you actually spend your time and challenging your assumptions is a great first step to having better work/life balance. You are just getting started.

Do you want a better relationship with your body? You can start by deleting social media accounts that make you feel bad about your body. You can acknowledge all the ways your body supports you. You can limit your body checking and throw away your scale. You can buy clothes that fit you and donate the clothes that don’t. Recognizing there are things you can do to improve your relationship with your body is just the beginning. You are just getting started.

Do you want more connection and belonging? Can you join a synagogue or church or a book club or knitting group or an online group that shares an interest that you have? Can you take a class or reach out to old friends? Does one of these call out to you? Go for it! You are just getting started.

Do you want to slow down? Can you practice saying no? Can you challenge your over-scheduling? Can you replace a workout with a nap? Reject the call to do more. How does this openness, rest and calm affect your nervous system? Does it clear your mind, boost your mood, increase your creativity? You are just getting started.

How does it feel to reach out and try something new? If it feels energizing, keep heading in that direction. Taking a first step builds momentum, creates a sense of agency and may reveal what your next step should be. Intentional change doesn’t have to be scary and big, you can do it at the pace that works for you.  You are just getting started.
